New York’s Medical Aid in Dying Act permits mentally competent adults who are terminally ill and have six months or less to live to self-administer prescribed medication to end their lives. The law assigns specific responsibilities and challenges to anesthesiologists and requires an extensive grasp of the clinical and ethical aspects of physician-assisted suicide.
