Sphere Editorial Guidelines
Thank you for your interest in submitting an article for Sphere – the quarterly online magazine for the New York State Society of Anesthesiologists, Inc. (NYSSA)!
Articles submitted for publication are accepted at the discretion of the editor and executive director. All contributions are subject to editing for length, clarity and conformity to NYSSA style. We follow the Associated Press (AP) Stylebook (57th Edition).
Submission Requirements Checklist:
- Format: Single-spaced Word document without headers or footers
- Include a title and subheads for your article
- Minimum word count: 500 words
- Spell out all acronyms in first use
- Include citation numbers as superscript characters within the article in numerical order, with corresponding reference numbers listed as endnotes. Note: References should not be incorporated as footnotes, nor should citation numbers be embedded within the text as an endnote or footnote. Authors are responsible for the accuracy and completeness of all references.

See past issues of Sphere for examples of reference style. Note: A member login is required.
- Include your list of authors with a brief description/bio at the end of the article. Example: “Molly Cat, MD, MBA, FASA, is a pediatric anesthesiologist and director of quality in Purry Hospital.”
- Include relevant figures, tables or graphics with your submission. Note the caption and appropriate placement of the graphic within the text of your article. Example: “Insert Figure 2: Catheter Types and Rates for Rapid Transfusion.” Note: provide all graphics as separate attachments; they will be inserted in the designated place during the web design process.
- Attach headshots of authors as jpg or png files (headshots requested but not required)
Deadlines for Sphere Quarterly Issues:
Spring Issue – January 15
Summer Issue – April 15
Fall Issue – July 15
Winter Issue – October 15
The editors reserve the right to request manuscript revisions from the original author(s) and/or to incorporate revisions directly. If substantial edits are required, including rewriting and restructuring of content, the editors will work with the author(s) to revise the article as needed for accuracy and readability. This may include requesting further edits and/or clarifications from the author(s).
