Our Ambulatory Anesthesiology Division has expanded significantly over the past two years with the creation  of a specialized orthopedic ambulatory surgery center (ASC), leading to a substantial increase in patient volume and regional anesthesia procedures. This growth has enhanced opportunities for anesthesiology resident education, as our ambulatory sites serve the regional rotation for our residency program. However, this growth also underscores the need to optimize our anesthesia services to meet rising clinical demands while upholding high educational standards.

Perioperative care—particularly for surgical and non-operative room procedures—is a vastly expanding field that will require even more anesthesia providers in the future. A shortage of anesthesiologists and certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) has resulted in the creation and utilization of a new category of anesthesia mid-level provider: certified anesthesiology assistants (CAAs).
