One Institution’s Response to the Perioperative Risk of GLP-1 Receptor Agonists
Since approval of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus, these drugs have become widely prescribed for the specific purpose of weight loss. A recent study estimated that 2% of all adult residents in the area surrounding Mount Sinai Hospital were prescribed one of these agents.

Ambulatory extended recovery facilities, which have evolved from ambulatory outpatient surgery programs, provide a unique set of benefits for many patients. Rather than limiting recoveries to just hours with a same day discharge, these facilities allow carefully selected complex procedures and patients to recover outside of the hospital for a one-night stay.

Exploring New Approaches to Providing Value-Added Care
Healthcare staffing, worsened to crisis levels by the pandemic, continues to deteriorate, affecting emergency departments, urgent care centers, clinics and hospitals alike. Healthcare systems have been forced to hire more expensive temporary healthcare workers in response to the deficit of long-term workers who left their jobs during the “Great Resignation.”

Farewell Address to the NYSSA House of Delegates
In 2006, I attended my first NYSSA HOD meeting as the District 2 director. It was David Bronheim who encouraged me to be more involved with the NYSSA. At the time, I found the environment extremely intimidating. Everyone seemed to know their roles and the process seemed so complicated. Later, while attending my first board meeting, I met a gentleman from upstate who, without the NYSSA, I would never have an occasion to meet.
